Monarch Fall Roost
Sightings report image

Date: 09/17/2021

Number: 2000

In same locations as the previous evening, but estimated 1000 in each location. At 6:30 p.m. (after a fall out of monarchs following a cold front). In the shelter belt at the Center, the monarchs were roosting mostly in red cedar, but also mulberry, honey locust and a couple of willow. All on the south side. Wind from the northwest (15 mph and gusty).
In the other roost, about 1/8th mile south, another estimated 1000 were roosting on cottonwood and willow on the south side of the trees over water. Wind was stronger and they were getting blown about quite a bit. There were probably more further down the shelter belt but I ran out of daylight.
