Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/17/2021

Number: 89

5:30pm I observed monarchs nectaring in a section of a clover field, caught & tagged 21 before seeing clusters forming in Large old trees between the clover & a corn field. Trees were south of a machine shed on the rise to the North, offering more shelter form any wind. Oak, basswood, & maple trees.
I spent time counting the clusters of 6-12 butterflies to arrive at 89 sighted.

[Additional information contributed by observer, added by Journey North, 09/21/21]:

I first saw monarchs in the oak, maple & basswood trees on Friday 9/17/2021 approximately 4:30pm.
I have returned each late afternoon/dusk since and have not seen clusters in the trees since. I have continued to capture and tag monarchs nectaring each day. 14 on 9/18; 24 on 9/19; and 12 on 9/20.
9/17/2021: Temp. 82' F wind speed 4 mph from southwest.
Starting near 5pm- I caught and tagged 21 monarchs that were nectaring on the red clover hay field near the trees.
Then I walked around, took photos and COUNTED the 89 adults visible in clusters of 4 to 12 in the 4 different trees.
