Arrived 6:10 pm. The temperature was 88 degrees, partly cloudy with light WNW winds. Hardly a tree leaf was moving. By 6:20 the numbers of monarchs coming in to roost area was pretty steady. Not near the numbers reported a few days ago. Walked around the east side of the picnic area where the shelters are located. Several of the trees in that area had small numbers of roosts in the trees, probably averaging around ten monarchs per roost. At that time they were still moving around, so I’m not sure if the moved to the center of the area or stayed there for the night. Sunset was at 6:58pm. The monarchs continued to settle in for the night. As it got darker and the crowd thinned, I took a quick survey of the main roosting area mostly scanning the low branches for roosts. The black walnut tree seemed to be the tree of choice as I was able to photograph and count around 100 monarchs in that roost. I could not get a good look at the red oaks for a roost count as it got dark pretty quick. Headed for home about 7:30. The total count for the night was around 500.
