I counted 24 in one hour while visiting the state park
[Additional information contributed by observer, added by Journey North, 09/22/21]:
I was at Canaan State Park near Davis WV. I was there for about 1 hour the afternoon of September 19. I saw all 26 monarchs in that hour, in the park. The area was about a 3 mile square. And they were flying over the mowed grass lawns of the park and along the roadsides in the park and a small area was meadow. A couple were nectaring but most were in directional flight. The direction seemed random but I wasn’t paying close attention. It was a warm sunny afternoon and no wind. There is so much milkweed here and I’ve observed so many caterpillars also.
I was not in the state park the 2 other days but I was near Dolly Sod wilderness. I did see 15 other monarchs, flying in the direction of the state park . They were nectaring too.
The weather is quite rainy today and I’m not observing any butterflies.
