Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/20/2021

Number: 25

East side of the Leamington Greenway just south of Oak Street located 25 Monarchs roosting in Spruce, Pine, Maple and Kentucky Coffee trees. The largest roost was 17 in the Kentucky Coffee tree. Clusters of two or three maximum. Mostly singles. All were located on the north-east side of the trees out of the very gusty strong South-west wind. Intermittent rain sprinkles with similar conditions forecast for the next 24 hours. Occasionally a Monarch was blown from its roost and had to struggle to return to the tree. Overcast 22C.

It should be noted that in the afternoon of the 20th, I observed 19 monarchs nectaring in the clover field just east of the roosted monarchs. Perhaps the roosted Monarchs were the same ones observed nectaring in the afternoon as the wind was not favourable for them to leave.

Time observing from 8:20 AM until 9:20 AM September 21. Calling it an overnight roost for the 20th as they would have been there overnight.
