Monarch Fall Roost
Sightings report image

Date: 09/21/2021

Number: 55

Roosting in Hawthorne, Spruce and White Pine trees. Rain predicted this evening.

[Additional information contributed by observer, added by Journey North, 09/22/21]:

The monarch roost of approximately 55 formed and stayed only one day. Today we checked and only found 9 monarchs in the same area. We live on 7 acres and have a large herb garden, perennial garden, and cutting garden. The zinnias and Mexican sunflowers are beautiful right now. Overnight temperatures were in the upper 40’s with a northwest wind and rain. The monarchs roosted in white pines, a hawthorn tree, spruces and a bald cypress. They moved and fluttered throughout the afternoon so getting a picture was tricky. My husband and I counted clusters of 10-12 monarchs in multiple trees in the same area. We estimated around 55.
