We were eating lunch in a shelter at Brown Memorial Pk. and walked over to Turkey Creek afterwards. We were surprised when we got to the creek bank to see monarch butterflies flying out of the bushes!
[Additional information contributed by observer, added by Journey North, 09/22/21]:
We live in Colorado Springs CO, and on Sept. 19 we were just passing through Kansas on I-70.
We spend a good amount of time at Cheyenne Mtn. State Park, south of Colorado Springs. One of the volunteers there who also conducts wildflower walks has been spreading milkweed seeds next to the trails in the park. This summer I noticed more milkweed plants and more monarchs along the trails. We can keep you updated about these sightings, but I have never seen a fall roost of monarchs in Colorado. We’ll keep you updated on the single monarch sightings when we notice them.
