Monarch, Captive-Reared
Sightings report image

Date: 09/21/2021

Number: 7

I raised 10 Monarch butterflies this year, 2021. 9 have been set free. 2 set free one week ago, 6 yesterday, and 1 today. I have one chrysalis left to hatch and expect that happening any day now. All butterflies were healthy.
I did have one chrysalis that didn't make it. The top didn't get fully sealed and it didnt survive.
About 6 weeks ago I noticed Monarch caterpillars on my milkweed. I used mesh laundry hampers to place over the plants to protect the caterpillars (opening at the bottom of the plant and floor of the hamper covering the top of the plant). The caterpillars used the floor of the hamper to form their chrysalis. Once formed, I brought them into my garage to protect them from wind, rain, and predators.
This is my first year to aid in the process of helping the Monarchs reach full maturity. I will definitely be looking to assist again next year and my neighbors are interested as well.
