I went downtown Tuesday morning after the cold front had come through and witnessed monarchs, about 5-10 flying southward and another 5-10 busy nectaring on plants. I also did witness two non migratory monarchs mating. I did go back to the gardens later that evening and witnessed over a dozen monarchs flying around trees for a roosting area.
[Additional information contributed by observer, added by Journey North, 09/23/21]:
All the monarchs were seen around the same time, about 1030 for an hour.
1030 am, for about an hour.
Yes, it was all downtown Oklahoma City in the myriad gardens.
I was watching the monarchs both flying south/southwest and nectaring. I also now remember getting a photo of a pair mating, which I had assumed all monarchs I had seen that morning were migratory.
The weather was mostly sunny, cool with a breezy north wind after the cold front had come through the previous evening.
Today, Thursday September 23rd I went back to the myriad gardens to watch the butterflies again and saw nectaring monarchs, a few, not as many as yesterday, flying south but also noticed many monarchs, about a half dozen or so, stopping and resting in trees, some individually but most butterflies were resting near other butterflies. And this was about 11 am to 1130 am as I had to leave.
