Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 09/21/2021

Number: 39

Gusty, strong Southwest wind (with gusts up to 30 km/h according to environment Canada), overcast and 22°C. Arrived at the clover field near the southwest corner of Sherk and Oak Streets at 14:30 after checking the trees where I had observed and reported roosts in the morning. The roosts were empty. Most monarchs observed were nectaring, however there were three that were roosting on the spent flowerheads of Queen Anne’s Lace. As I walked back to where I parked my car, I noticed that the wind was much stronger near the roost trees. As I looked back I realised that the clover field was in a depression of the land and the Monarchs may have been protected from the wind there. I hypothesised that they may spend the night there as the wind was expected to continue and rain was on the way. Time observing was 45 minutes and I used my binoculars and the naked eye.
