Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/21/2021

Number: 9

08:20 September 22. Overcast with light rain, 14°C, strong North wind with gusts up to 28 km according to Environment Canada. (Wind switched overnight 180°) Quickly checked the roost trees on the east side of the Leamington Greenway just south of Oak St. No Monarchs observed roosting there. Made my way to the clover field near the southwest corner of Sherk and Oak Streets. As I had suspected, some Monarchs spent the night in the field. All were observed on spent flowerheads of Queen Anne’s Lace in various locations in the field. One group of two. All were facing north into the wind. Rain started coming down hard so I had to leave. There may have been more Monarchs as I only observed the ones that were perched up higher than the rest of the flowers in the field.
Calling it a roost on 21 September as they would have spent the night there. Time observing was 20 minutes and I used my binoculars and the naked eye.
