At 14:30 September 22, I visited the clover field near the north-west corner of Sherk and Oak Streets. 14°C, strong gusty North wind with gusts up to 28 km/h according to Environment Canada. Located some of the same Monarchs in the same locations I had noted them in the morning and had reported as an overnight roost for the evening of September 21. Rain started coming down harder so I had to run.
I am reporting on my observations of the morning of September 23. I looked in the same locations where the Monarchs were noted on the 22nd. I found two on the exact same Queen Anne’s Lace flowerheads I had observed them the day before. One curious observation is that they had changed their orientation on the spent flowerheads 180° The wind had also changed 180° approximately, so now the monarchs were once again facing into the wind. I was able to locate five Monarchs before the rain chased me away. (One of the Monarchs from yesterday had been joined on its flowerhead by another.) I will be checking again at 14:30 on the 23rd to see if they are still there. Time of observation 08:20 - 08:40 12°C, moderate, gusty South wind, rain. Observations made using my binoculars and the naked eye.
