Over the course of about an hour, I counted 110 Monarchs west over our school yard. It was so cool to see!
[Additional information contributed by observer, added by Journey North, 09/24/21]:
Yesterday morning, I took some students outside around 10:30 am CDT as it was a sunny day and about 75 degrees with only a slight breeze. I saw one Monarch flying toward us from the east and heading west. As soon as I said something to my husband who also teaches with me about it, he saw another one. About 5 seconds later we saw another and that's when I started counting them as best I could as they came through. I was able to keep watching for about 45 minutes before I had to take students back inside. The Monarchs were flying anywhere from 4 to 30 feet in the air. Very few veered far from the path of the others as they just kept going west - very intently. They came in intervals anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes.
I planted milkweed in my yard this year for the first time and had one Monarch caterpillar appear and emerge from its chrysalis so seeing so many Monarchs yesterday was special to me as I'm trying to help as best I can. Unfortunately, the wildflowers I had planted in our schoolyard to provide food were mowed down by our maintenance department.
