Monarchs counted on a one hour census
[Additional information contributed by observer, added by Journey North, 09/28/21]:
My count is based on the procedure used by the Cape May Monarch Monitoring Project census. I have a set route that I follow through the town of Cape May Point NJ. I remain in the car and count from there. My path goes by many of the known nectaring gardens at the point. It takes about an hour to do the route. And I try to start at 2PM EDT or as close as I can get. For the most part, at that time of the day, monarchs at the point are nectaring (or at least attempting to), so there is really no directional flight. If I went later there probably would be a flight towards or over the bay.
For the most part count are actual, but last Sunday there were so many in one tree that I did estimate.
