Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/26/2021

Number: 3

We still have two of our resident juvenile rubies with us, one male and one female. We also had a traveler come through today and all three were chasing one another around the yard. Our resident juvenile male is extremely spunky and was in hot pursuit. He is so funny to watch. He'll chase the chickadees and goldfinches around if they get too close to his feeder or his perch.

The traveler didn't appear to stay very long, but I hope he or she was able to refuel at one of the feeder/ flowers around the yard. Both of our juveniles are fattening up nicely, the male more so than the female, but she is coming along. The male has changed his perching location and is not front and center for me to watch throughout the day as he was since our resident adult male left on the 7th (he took his Daddy's perch). However, I did see him multiple times throughout the day and observed him at his feeder at dusk.

The juvenile female is much more timid and definitely does not chase the songbirds. Instead, she really tries to stay out of their way. She has become rather friendly with me, however, and seems to enjoy when I'm outside. She perches on a mock orange when I'm out on the patio and will even follow me to find me if I'm going from the back yard to the front, and vice versa. She will squeak to let me know that she is around.

It is fascinating to observe them and such a treasure and blessing to have them share our yard. I find myself torn to want them to stay another day, all the while also hoping that they will be on their way so that there will be plenty of flowers, insects, clean feeders, and good weather on their journey south. I pray they leave on just the day they should. Until they do, I'll cherish their time here.
