Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/26/2021

Arrived at the Leamington Greenway just south of Oak Street. Very strong gusty South-west wind, overcast but clearing, 21C. Immediately spotted Monarchs on a Maple tree just west of the trail and the English Beech tree west of it. Checked the surrounding trees where Monarchs have been sighted previously and found them on the Spruce and Pines. Also, a new location on a Maple along the east fence. The largest clusters were found on a Pine, a Spruce and the Maple and Beech first mentioned. All roosts located on north-eastern or eastern exposures in the lee of the wind.
Monarchs were being blown from their perches by the wind. Some reestablished on the trees they were blown from and others relocated to more sheltered spots on the Spruce where other Monarchs were already roosting. Some Monarchs were seen heading to the Red Clover field immediately east of this location.

Headed quickly to the clover field and found at least 50 monarchs nectaring and some also just holding on to the Red Clover flowers (I nearly stepped on half a dozen.) They were impossible to count as the wind was blowing them to and fro. It appeared that some were arriving low to the ground from the south. (N.B. This clover field number is not included in the count above.)

Time observing 60 minutes with binoculars and the naked eye and counted individually.
