Hummingbird Sighting
Sightings report image

Date: 09/27/2021

Number: 4

Started out with 3 ruby throated hummers this morning. They all left before noon. I thought that was it for the season. Then a female showed up in the afternoon and tanked up at a nectar feeder. So that made 4 for the day. I had hoped she would stay for the evening as she headed for cover that hummers usually use when they are around. Alas, it seems she continued her journey south. At the very end of light this evening I saw a bird land in our Lilac tree. The only bird I know of that can stop that fast is a hummingbird. I waited to see what would happen when it left. With almost no light left a bird shot nearly straight up out of the Lilac and zipped over the top of the house, as other hummers commonly do. It had the flight characteristics and profile of a hummingbird. I could see it back-lit against the sky. So if this was a ruby throat that would make for 5 for the day. But I can't confirm that as a sighting (unless I see one in the morning). Otherwise this is probably my last report for the season.
