Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 09/27/2021

Number: 450

14:20 sunny 25°C, wind Southwest 14 km/h gusting to 29 km/h. Red Clover field near the south-west corner of Sherk and Oak Streets. Intense nectaring activity. No Monarchs seen leaving. Count was done by pacing off the field into quadrants of 10 x 10 paces. Counted 18 in two quadrants, for an average of nine per quadrant. Multiplied nine by the number of quadrants in the field and then subtracted the number of quadrants that had no Monarchs Came up with 486. I am rounding down to 450 to be conservative.
Overnight roosts empty.
Wind switches to Northeast overnight. I am writing this report on Tuesday, September 28. Checked the field at 08:30: 13°C North wind (0°) at 13 km/h, bright clear skies and there were seven Monarchs. Found two roosting; once they warmed their wings they were gone. If the others roosted overnight they were up early and away. Lots of migration happening in this location at time of second observation including Broad Wings,Turkey Vultures and Blue Jays.
