today a satisfactory image of one of two monarch chrysalises found yesterday during a bout of weeding in an herb garden - small clump of common milkweed about 10 m distant. each chrysalis was discovered hanging from a plant stem after the weedy plant was pulled from the herb garden. then we attached the weedy stem to a bush cherry branch with zip ties in hope an adult monarch might eclose from each pupa. not yet; still hopeful. good image only with steady background of my hat. these are late season pupae, but not nearly the latest we have recorded since our JN records started fall 2003.
