Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 09/28/2021

Number: 2

two monarchs at this location today: first seen at 1128 hours high overhead seen only because we were watching a juvenile bald eagle, a red-tailed hawk, and a broad-winged hawk soar directly overhead in a slow thermal. the monarch seemed as high as the hawks, but was probably at quite lower altitude. the hawks and then this monarch were distinctive against a background of dark clouds.

a second monarch passed this location at 1228 hours just at treetop height. while the first was soaring and circling with hawks before departing to the WSW, this second butterfly was in fast full powered flight from ENE to WSW.

these are two of three monarchs seen today, this equals our previous high count on 13 SEP 2021 when we also observed three monarchs. like today, on 13 SEP we observed one along Water St. and then later in the day at this favorite location in west Waterville. if 3 monarchs during a single day represent our high counts, does either of these dates [13 or 28 SEP 2021] correspond to Peak Migration in Central Maine for the 2021 monarch migration?
