Sightings report image

Date: 09/29/2021

Number: 150

Our largest number of nightly visitors yet this year. First noticed them arriving around 4:30 p.m. and they continued until right up to dark. One of the first trees you encounter when coming into my yard from the N.E. is a big bald cypress, and this was definitely where most settled-in. I counted at least eight groups of 5-7 individuals, and approximately 85 total in this one tree alone. They favored the N.E. side, as well as deeper in the open branches, and did very little looking around before finding their spots for the night. Some are only 3' from the ground, while other singles are scattered as high as 20' up.
Other trees that hosted small groups include the silver maples, Norway spruce, white pine, and American arborvitae. Most were on the sides facing into the yard, thus protected from any wind, and ranged from 5' to 12' off the ground.
The other interesting thing about tonight's arrivals was the presence of TWO mating couples, both coming in late and finding spots on the bald cypress.
Heavy nectaring on the Tithonia and Cosmos this afternoon and evening, with a headcount of 21 at one point in the Tithonia patch.
Temps today were very warm, pushing 90F, with light SE breezes around 5-7 mph. Sky was clear with a few passing cirrus clouds and a comfortable humidity in the 40% range. Pressure right around 30.00 mb. By sunset, wind was calm with temp dropping into the low 70's and heading to the low 60's tonight.
