When my husband was mowing in the late afternoon, he disturbed monarchs resting in bushes and the lower branches of trees. He estimated over 100 monarchs took flight, but returned to the trees/shrubs. The estimate was based on being familiar with various numbers of captive reared monarchs being released. Between 4:35 pm and 4:55 pm, I observed 34 monarchs nectaring on New England Asters (picture). It was bright, but not sunny at 85° with a SSE wind at about 15 mph. All butterflies were on the leeside of flowers, trees, and shrubs. A few butterflies were flying in from the surrounding harvested fields.
