Monarch Fall Roost

We were out looking to tag Monarchs and observed about 50 coming to roost in the willow trees. Temperature was about 80 deg. F at around 6:30pm. Rain off to the west moving our direction. Low winds.

We have been watching this area for many years now- starting watching this year on Friday, October 1.

Nearby nectar sources: mostly sunflowers, poverty weed

Night winds have been calm, day wind from the south. Temperatures overnight /low 70’s.

Tree of choice / black willows along edge of lake

Since we have been tagging each night, we are able to get a count of tagged ones plus the ones that get away and did not catch for tagging.
Some numbers are estimates (very close estimates).
