Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 10/02/2021

Number: 17

Went for an afternoon walk with grandchildren around pine surrounded my loblolly pines and deciduous trees about 5 PM. Noted 17 butterflies settling in for the evening. (Had a great time counting!!!)

[Additional information contributed by observer, added by Journey North, 10/04/21]:

The first I noticed was last week as I was walking around my pond. Yesterday 3 Oct when I walked around about 3 PM I noted none but will continue walking around the pond later in the day, 5-6 PM to see additional travelers. They never seem to specifically congregate into a large roost, but I note them getting settled in for the evening.

At this stage mainly just nectaring on random wildflowers, a I do have a few cosmos and sunflowers. I have noted some occasionally feeding on overripe apples near my Granny Smith tree

Lows over the past week have ranged 55-64 degrees Any breeze has been under 10 MPH and mostly under 5, predominantly from the south

Primary roosting tree is Loblolly pine woods, with a smattering of Elm, black jack Pecan, and Mulberry Trees

My counts have been a fairly accurate count. As I walk around the pond, taking 20-30 minutes (Just a walk should only take me about 10 minutes), I try to spot and see what they do ( fly to a different tree, continue flying off, etc) as I note them so as not duplicate counts
