Monarch Fall Roost
Sightings report image

Date: 10/05/2021

Number: 174

National Park Service-Amistad Recreation Area. This site was last checked on September 29 and none were seen - they appear to have arrived today or in the last couple of days. Seen roosting along a 1 mile stretch of the roadside mostly on huisache trees and baccarhis (false willow).

[Additional information contributed by observer, added by Journey North, 10/09/21]:

The roost formed on 10/5/21, as least as far as we know. The last time it was checked was on 9/28/21. They had all departed by the next day though -there was only 1 left the next morning at sunrise 10/6/21. The main blooming plant nearby was false willow- Baccharis neglecta. Temps overnight warm and humid, high 60s to low 70s and still over 70% humidity at dawn. Wind was very light out of the east, less than 5mph. They were roosting on huisache -Vachellia farnesiana, hackberry-Celtis reticulata, and the Baccharis. They were shielded from the wind, although it was very minimal.

We counted them one by one when numbers are fairly low. We do use a clicker as we go. If numbers get into the 100s or over 1000 (Which they have in other years) we usually just count by clumps of 5 or 10.

We've seen this a few times in our area where we get a first mini wave of migrants after the first cold front of fall, and then a second wave occurs after the next, usually stronger cold front.
