Small numbers of monarchs began entering the Phoenix area last week but this was the first sighting in our backyard in Chandler. The female monarch was in excellent condition and arrived around 3PM nectaring on lantana. She stayed until dusk nectaring on milkweed and other flowers. She appeared again at 9 a.m. the following morning to nectar for 45 minutes and left. We watched her closely but she never laid any eggs despite evergreen milkweed in flower present either yesterday afternoon when she arrived or this morning before she left.Highs were in the upper 80's, low temperature 64.
