Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 10/10/2021

Number: 2000

Monarchs roost annually during migration in the large trees at the Schleicher County courthouse in Eldorado, Texas. Typically they appear each October.

This year large groups began to filter in on Tuesday, October 5th, and left the morning of Monday, October 11th. During that time the numbers grew from perhaps 1,000 or more roosting the night of the 5th to a few thousand (likely more than 2,000, but 2,000 is a conservative estimate) roosting the night of the 10th.

On the morning of the 11th, the group numbering in the thousands appeared to vacate. Later in the day, several hundred monarchs could again be observed at the courthouse.

[Additional information contributed by observer, added by Journey North,10/16/2022]:

Every year, thousands of monarchs roost in my town. The most notable public spot is the courthouse square.

I watch the monarchs here every year and communicate their arrival to other interested people across Texas.

When I report monarchs here, I tend to underestimate the numbers. When large groups are here, they number upward of 2,000 at the courthouse alone.
