After seeing 2 monarchs flying low over the pasture, I looked at some of the milkweed plants. I found 20+ monarch eggs and 15+ monarch larvae (newborn through 4th instar). Some monarchs are here laying eggs, but this is earlier than usual. We don't normally see them at this time of year.

This is a photo of a little 3rd instar monarch caterpillar nibbling on the flower bud of an Asclepias viridis milkweed.
