Pleasant sight for me today, a fresh female Monarch butterfly on butterfly bush with a couple very late flower heads and many fresh leaf shoots. Did not observe her nectaring, but maybe sunning in the brief minutes of sunshine at 1412 today, 64°F, light SSW wind (5-10mph); warm and humid after morning rain shower and overnight low of 62°F. October so far has been unusually warm, 3.4 inches rainfall from the 1st up until now, with daytime highs 65 to 75F, nighttime lows 55 to 62F; (normal temps would be 40°F to 50°F). Most milkweed has dropped foliage already, and plants with seed pods mostly released their seeds, but there are a few plants today still with yellow leaves on, and an occasional plant with green leaves yet. Most wildflowers in the area are spent and brown. Hopeful that she will be able to get on her way quickly and make the journey south.
