Today at around noon I saw 5 monarch butterflies. At least 4 of them were females flying low over the pasture looking for milkweed. They were actively egg-laying. A couple of times two of them would flutter close to each other. That would cause them to do a gentle air-tussle, but then each came down and went back to looking for milkweed. There is plenty of fresh milkweed ~ sprouts, budding, and flowering.
It was sunny, 78 degrees F, 33% humidity, and a light breeze from the east. This is one of the female monarchs as she nectared from a flowering milkweed (Asclepias viridis).
