Monarch Fall Roost
Sightings report image

Date: 10/17/2021

Number: 200

Around 6:30 pm, several clusters distributed in several trees on the sides of the stream.

[Additional information contributed by observer, added by Journey North, 10/18/21]:

They were on large trees that are on the side of two streams, at the foot of the Sierra Madre Oriental mountains. It is common on these dates to watch roosting butterflies in large numbers, but as they are distributed in groups of 20 to 50 butterflies distributed in the different trees it is difficult to appreciate them in a single photograph.

The trees are: Pinus sp., Ehretia anacua, Salix nigra, Prosopis glandulosa, Vachellia farnesiana, Parkinsonia aculeata, Fraxinus sp., among others. The sources of nectar are some wild flowers in the surroundings, as well as some small gardens in houses and public parks.
