I spent the first two weeks of October 2021 on the California coast between Laguna Beach and Pacific Grove. I saw one to several monarchs everywhere I went, every day. But activity was most obvious at San Simeon Reserve, where I saw quite a few individuals over the shoreline and in a Monterey pine grove that, I hear, was once a large overwintering site. I also counted at least two dozen feeding on forbs in a seasonal wetland (probably a significant undercount because I didn’t have binoculars with me). I checked last years’ Thanksgiving count and didn’t see this site listed. I hope Xerxes Society will include it this year.
