Sightings report image

Date: 10/21/2021

Number: 70

Point Pelee National Park at the Tip 4:20-5:50pm
Sunset 6:38
Daytime high 17°c
Overnight low 7c with real feel of 3c!
15°c Partly sunny
Strong WSW wind @ 43/57kmh.
Coldfront arriving this evening.
Last warm weather day.

Late afternoon, holding on tight, about 70 monarchs were located roosting on the 'calmer' east side at the Tip. Many were blown by the very strong west wind from their clusters out to the east side over the lake & fought the wind to get back to the trees. Obviously they don't want to go east or they would be. They are determined to go SW toward Texas/Mexico.
They roost on the east side to get sunrise sun.
Numerous Clusters of 2-5 spread out north to south along east side. There really wasn't any sheltered area due to very strong west wind blowing through the partially bare trees due to Autumn.
Clusters were on Hackberry, Grape & Virginia creeper vines, Hop & Mulberry trees.

They appeared pristine.
Observations by eye, binoculars, camera and clicker.

Located a tagged female Monarch ACWC715 on a Hackberry tree north of halfway cut off path. Reported to MW Recovery.

10/22/21 late afternoon about 30 left roosting. Had departures & arrivals throughout the day. Morning observed by friend Laura who submitted report.
They should make their departure 10/24 8-10am with warm temp 11/12c, sunshine & light northerly wind.
