Sightings report image

Date: 10/23/2021

Number: 450

At Avndaro and Bugambilias Park stream, Col. Lomas del Paseo, Monterrey, N.L. We counted around 450 monarchs perched in at least 17 trees along the stream, mainly willows, and also ebony, cinnamon, Japanese umbrella, broom, ash, among others. Observation time 8:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., temperature 19C, cloudy sky. Travel start point: 25 37'10.2 "N 100 18'02.8" W
(25.619499, -100.300777), travel end point: 25 37'19.2 "N 100 17'53.6" W
(25.621987, -100.298219). The sources of nectar are a few wild flowers and a few small urban gardens. As a curious fact, we observed a pair of Luis bienteveo (Pitangus sulphuratus) stalking the perched butterflies, some of which, upon feeling the vibrations of the branches, took flight. We could not observe if there was any predation. Until now we have not found predated monarchs on the ground.
