While walking away from the beach along State Park Drive at Grandview Nature Preserve in Hampton, Virginia, I saw 1 male monarch nectaring on goldenrod growing along the north side of the road at about 2:30 pm. Another monarch flew up from the nearby vegetation. Both butterflies were spooked by either me or the movement of other vegetation when a small breeze blew down the road. I had brought my gear to hopefully net, tag and release wild monarchs here. These two were the only monarchs I saw in the 45 to 60 minutes spent in the Reserve searching. Wind speed and direction or visitors along the beach may have kept butterflies down out of sight, nectaring in thick vegetation off the road and other paths. In previous years monarchs were often seen actively migrating by following the shoreline south when favoring winds and weather occurred. Better luck next time!
