My friend who has a home here in Ocean Isle has seen monarchs in the exact same area during the latter part of October dating back to 2018
[Additional information contributed by observer, added by Journey North, 10/28/21]:
The area where my friend saw the monarchs in the past is the same as where we saw them this week. It’s an area at the end of a gated dead end street. On one side of the street is a single row of beach houses and then the ocean. On the other side of the street is the vegetation where we saw the monarchs, and behind the vegetation is inter coastal waterways.
Because my friend has seen them in the past, we walked to this area on Monday, October 25, 2021, looking for monarch butterflies. None were there. We returned on Tuesday, October 26, at 1:45 pm and there were hundreds (an estimate-too many to actually count) in the vegetation. Some were flying and some were resting. We stayed and observed for a half hour. It was 72 degrees and sunny and not windy. We returned at 6:30 pm that night and they were roosting. There were hundreds. It was 66 degrees and again not windy. We observed approximately 15 minutes.
We returned to the area on Wednesday, October 27 at 12:35 pm and they were still there. It was 68 degrees and sunny and not windy. We returned at 6:30 pm and found them roosting. We observed them for a half hour. It was 61 degrees and not windy.
This morning we walked to the site at 9:50 am and they were gone. We did see 3 or 4 but that was it. It’s 63 degrees and sunny with no wind.
