Monarch Fall Roost
Sightings report image

Date: 10/28/2021

Number: 13

This was a small group that I was fortunate to see forming, otherwise it would've been impossible to see. There was one spot with 8 butterflies together & others were nearby-3 by themself & another spot where there were 2 together. I'm sure there could have been others that I didn't spot. They went to the SE side of a Red Oak tree where I saw a large roost last year. There are other trees around this one that help block the north winds coming off the lake. The winds were very strong: N/NW sustained 15 mph with gusts to 30 mph. The roost began forming early at about 3:30 pm, so I'm wondering if they were tired from strong winds. Temperature was 69 degrees at that time and they fell into the upper 40's overnight. This location also gets nice bright sunlight first thing in the morning.

The next day, 10/29/2021, there were around 20 Monarchs hanging around my yard. Winds were still strong from the north, but not quite as bad. Then about 4pm, I went to check & another roost was forming on the same tree. I wasn't able to stick around to count this time. But this was the first time I've seen a roost 2 nights in a row.
