We live in North Asheville, North Carolina. My five-year-old daughter and I found a monarch caterpillar on a milkweed plant in our yard. We watched the caterpillar create a chrysalis. We were monitoring the chrysalis on the milkweed plant until it got torn off the plant In a windstorm. We took the chrysalis inside, and re-attached it to a branch. We watched the chrysalis open indoors. A female monarch butterfly emerged at 2am on October 31 (Halloween). Once the wings were dry, and the butterfly was able to fly on its own, we released it outdoors around noon on Halloween day. We witnessed her drinking nectar from cosmos, we released her in a field full of zinnias and cosmos. Best wishes on your journey to Mexico sweet monarch!
