I watched the Adult Female Monarch lay an egg on 10/30/2021 in our butterfly milkweed patch approximately 4:00pm. 618 Killarney Richardson Tx. Due to thunderstorms and temperatures forecasted, we decided to raise this one egg indoors and let any potential eggs to nature (we didn't actively look for others). She emerged on Thursday, the early starting about 7am Thanksgiving Day 2021 . We waited to release due to wind advisory and temperatures. Friday seemed good but weather never went above 55, and she wouldnt leave, so we took her back inside since Saturday was a thunderstorm forecast. Saturday she drank the honey water introduced to her. She drank again Sunday morning. Sunday around 10:45am temp reached 55 and took her from indoor temp of 68. We opened the butterfly mesh basket hoping she would fly out herself but she stayed wings open warming herself. Since I didn't want her to damage her wings flying out, I held out my finger and gently took her out. I let her crawl to the milkweed flowers on the milkweed plants she was born on. One she had footing, She immediately flew to the bush a few feet south from milkweeds, warmed for a few minutes then flew 20 feet south to the tree pictured here about 11am. She was warming herself and the south winds were blowing 9mph. Though we did not see her leave, we're confident she took advantage of the South winds and warming temperatures. No tag. We wish her well!
