I previously reported seeing monarch caterpillars outside. I brought in a few large ones just before our first freeze on January 3. 5 of them made chrysalids. 4 eclosed between January 13 and 16. They were all healthy, 3 female and 1 male. The 5th never eclosed. I tried feeding them grapes and cantaloupe but never saw them eat. On January 16 it was 60 degrees and they were quite rambunctious. I decided to let them loose even though I knew the forecast was for more freezing weather over the next couple of weeks. It was emotionally difficult but perhaps my data will help you get a picture of the increasing winter activity in the southeast.
