Monarch, Captive-Reared

Date: 02/03/2022

Number: 5

I'm raising some monarch caterpillars I found in Dec 26 2021 in my complex. We have native milkweed in our landscaping. I bought additional milkweed to feed about 3 doz caterpillars. I've lost about a third of the caterpillars due to bacterial infections (turned black, improperly formed chrysaliades). Six butterflies have emerged so far, one with crumpled wings. I'm expecting another two to three butterflies today. I have about 13 green chryslaides remaining after the expected emergences. We have another four spotted chrysaliades near the original milkweed plants.
