I saw my first monarch of the season today! I was looking out our kitchen window and saw a wonderful monarch flying low over the grass, slow but steady. It had disappeared by the time I made it outside. This happened around noon, 68 degrees F, sunny, strong winds from the SW, and 32% humidity.
Over the course of the day I saw 3 more monarchs. They were flying through (not seeming to want to stay), though two nectared on blackberry blossoms & a just bloomed yellow thistle.
Though I have been looking diligently, I have not seen any milkweed sprouts across our meadows. We did have some nighttime freezes in the last week. Spring seems a bit late: our pear tree has not yet bloomed & the woodland trees are just now starting to show some green leaflets. But the redbuds are blooming and we do have nectar flowers like false garlic in abundance.
It was so good to see these beautiful monarchs, as they traveled on their northward journey. Just need the milkweed to come up and greet them.
