Today, at about 2:30pm I saw a monarch fly towards the pastures. It was 68 degrees, sunny, winds 14mph from the west, and with 23% humidity. When I got down into the meadow, I saw a female monarch actively looking for milkweed. She was very determined (thankfully) and kept looking and looking. I knew where one sprout was, but she did not find that one. She eventually found four little milkweed sprouts all in one small space (I would not have seen them). She lay multiple eggs on each one ~ in between she went on searches across the pasture (several acres), but no luck. She was looking in all the right places, but the milkweed is not much emerged yet. So, she returned and lay more eggs on the four sprouts (21 eggs total). Then she rested right next to the sprouts.
Later in the afternoon, I saw a male monarch nectaring from a yellow thistle.
This is a photo of the beautiful & determined female monarch finding a milkweed sprout to lay eggs on.
