Again, I suddenly found more chrysalides laying in the mulch beside our door entrance. There is no silk attached to their cremasters. I have found 15+ the past week! At first, I thought they dropped from the Indian Hawthorn bushes growing above. The best I can guess is that instead of the caterpillar searching for a place on which to J-hang, it burrows into the mulch, and once it forms its chrysalis, it pops on top of the mulch. I plan to leave the chrysalides in the mulch to eclose when the time comes to observe this behavior. I cannot find any information online regarding this!
