First monarch larvae seen today! It was sunny and 61 degrees F at 11:20am. Found 16 1st instars on four milkweed plants. In the photo are six larvae ~ hard to spot. There were also eggs on these plants, including some that were darkened & ready to hatch soon. These were milkweed plants that emerged first & the monarchs had to choose to overload them, because of the scarcity of milkweed at that time. First monarch eggs were seen 3/23/2022. The native milkweed (Asclepias viridis) emerged later than normal this spring.
