At 11am it was 69 degrees F, sunny, calm, with 69% humidity ~ great monarch weather. At that time I saw at least five females seeking milkweed & laying eggs. There were multiple males flying around. The males would spot the females and they would go on a merry chase into the air ~ I didn't see any captures at this time. The grass was wet with dew and the monarchs were frequently resting and sunning their wings.
Throughout the day, I saw monarchs around (often floating past me to my delight): flying, nectaring, and milkweed-seeking. Thankfully, the native Asclpias viridis milkweed is emerging strongly at this time.
This is a photo of two male monarchs agreeing to nectar from the same yellow thistle in the late afternoon ~ it had been a long day.
