At 11am it was 70 degrees F, sunny, light breezes from the SE, with 76% humidity. I saw 12+ individual monarchs: flying, milkweed-seeking, egg-laying, nectaring, and moments when females were chased (no captures that I saw).
I observed monarchs throughout the day. They continue to have good options for nectar: blackberry blossoms, yellow thistles, false garlic flowers, and now lyre-leaf sage. Also, the milkweed is getting larger and new sprouts are up in all the usual locations.
This morning I followed an intrepid female monarch as she found milkweed to lay her eggs on ~ very skillful. She also nectared on the nearby blackberry blossoms at times. I took note of her very tattered wings, but her spirit was strong. This is her laying eggs on a fresh sprout.
