This was another active monarch day. I observed 20+ individual monarchs. At 1:30pm it was 71 degrees F, sunny, wind 18mph from the NW, with 17% humidity. Another day of gusting, strong winds!
I saw a lot of resting/sunning in the grass & monarchs flying into the woodland areas (maybe to escape the wind). Monarchs were sailing around (males patrolling & looking for females), nectaring, females looking for milkweed & egg-laying. The wildflowers and milkweed are abundant. I did see males give a chase to females at times, but did not observe actual captures.
This is a male monarch (with a slightly torn wing) sipping deeply from a pink thistle ~ a good respite from this windy, dry day.
