Sightings report image

Date: 04/11/2022

Number: 71

This afternoon I did a milkweed survey for monarch eggs and larvae. I looked at 214 milkweed plants (Asclepias viridis) and found a total of 160 eggs and 71 larvae. *I am sure I missed some.* I did the survey from 2:20-5:30pm looking at a few of the main milkweed areas.

These are the monarch egg count results:

129 milkweed w/0 eggs
47 milkweed w/1 egg
21 milkweed w/2 eggs
7 milkweed w/3 eggs
7 milkweed w/4 eggs
1 milkweed w/5 eggs
0 milkweed w/6 eggs
1 milkweed w/7 eggs
0 milkweed w/8 eggs
0 milkweed w/9 eggs
1 milkweed w/10 eggs

These are the monarch larvae count results:

1st instars: 46
2nd instars: 16
3rd instars: 7
4th instars: 2

Note: Some of the milkweed with 0 or some eggs also had one or more larvae.

This is a photo of a trio of 2nd instars in a milkweed bud crown.
