Dear Madam or Sir:
I hope you are well. Our first male Ruby-throated Hummingbird visitor for 2022 arrived on:
Date: April 15, 2022
Time: 06:45 PM CDT
Barometer: 28.52 in., (965.8 mb.)
Dewpoint: 46ºF, (7ºC)
Humidity: 25%
Solar Radiation: 211 w/m2
Temperature: 86ºF, (30ºC)
Visibility:10 mi., Sunny
Wind Speed: South at 3.7 mph
We put the feeder out for Hummingbirds beginning the first week of April when the first noticeable Great State of Oklahoma flower began to bloom on the Eastern Redbud tree. On April 6, 2022, we noticed our first male Black-chinned Hummingbird. We have noticed two different male Black-chinned Hummingbirds in the past two weeks along with a female. Also, the blossoms on the Eastern Redbud tree are still in bloom today, April 16, in the Chisholm Creek Watershed adjacent to our home.
Interestingly, we live in USDA Planting Zone 7; however, we had (-)10ºF, (-23ºC) temperatures in February 2021, reflective of USDA Planting Zone 5. So far, in 2022 we believe our coldest temperature reflective of USDA Planting Zone 6 was 9ºF, (-12ºC) in February 2022. Due to the late snow storms and freezing weather in late February 2022, we expect our Hummingbird plants, Perennial Salvia and Rose of Sharon, to be delayed in blooming until May 2022.
Best regards,
William (Bill) Motsenbocker II
